The Milford High School Theater department will be putting on a musical comedy on March 7th- March 9th. It is called the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and includes interactive audience participation.
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a production written by lyricist William Finn. The show is quite literally set in a fictional gymnasium, where a local competition of children competes to go to the national spelling bee in Washington, D.C.
The characters are peculiar individuals, each with their strengths and weaknesses. The six main children each have a different backstory as to why they wish to win the “Bee.” The Bee is run by three other passionate adults, each guiding the children in their own way through the competition.
The six spellers are not the only ones who get to participate onstage. This concept is very different from other Milford Productions, but audience participation is encouraged through volunteering to be a speller. Throughout the first act, if you sign up at the door when you see this show, you can become a part of the musical. Audience members get called up against the characters to spell a word. You are given specific instructions to spell these words. If you spell it wrong, you are out and sent you off to go back and watch the rest of the show!
The students in the cast and crew have been working hard for this show. This is vocally a heavy musical, and this includes many fun dance numbers that add to the chaos of this spelling bee.
