The H5 Bird Flu is currently spreading in livestock and some cases in humans. Here’s what to know about it:
H5 Bird Flu is spreading in wild birds, dairy cattle, poultry flocks, and in mammals. So far there has only been sixty-seven confirmed cases in humans in the U.S and only one death to come from the Bird Flu. This is not contracted from person to person contact.
What does this mean for dairy products? Do not worry about milk, nearly all of the milk supply in the U.S follows a Grade A Milk Safety Program and the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance also known as PMO. Both of these programs include safety measures to ensure all dairy products are safe to consume.
Eggs on the other hand can be a cause for concern. The price of eggs just keeps climbing. In the past year it has increased by 50%. This is due to the Bird Flu outbreak this is because almost 13 million hens have been slaughtered or died due to the Bird Flu.
This has been detrimental to hens and chickens as it spreads so fast throughout flocks, it can wipe them out in just a number of days.
So far there is no grave cause for concern as it is not contracted from person to person contact. The only thing to watch out for is the price of eggs rising even more.
