On November 6, 2024 AP News called the election announcing that former President Donald Trump would be the 47th President of the United States.
An overwhelming majority of the electoral votes went to Trump as he got 312 votes and Kamala Harris got 226. A candidate would need 270 votes to become president. Trump even won the popular vote by 2.3%.
In his victory speech, Trump claimed that “This will truly be the golden age of America, that’s what we have to have.” He went on to thank his family and friends, his Vice President JD Vance, and tech-billionaire Elon Musk.
Vice President Harris delivered her concession speech on November 6. She focused her speech on never giving up and that she will keep fighting for freedom, opportunity, and fairness for all Americans. Harris said, “the light of America’s promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting.”
In terms of the actual votes, Trump won all seven of the battleground states. Arizona was the last state he needed to flip. Back in 2020, he lost the state to President Biden but then won those eleven electoral votes making him win.
According to AP News, Trump got 74,952,225 votes and Harris got 71,744,039 votes in terms of the popular vote.
The state of Pennsylvania shocked many voters as it is historically a blue state. However, in 2016 they voted for Trump and then they repeated this year.
Trump has stated that when he is inaugurated he will have a stronger border policy and immigrants can only come into the country “the right way”. He also has stated under his presidency there will be no wars, in fact he claims that he will stop all wars.
President Biden will still be in office for a couple more months. As Trump will be sworn in on January 20, 2025.
